* Monday classes will not be runnung this term.  Class sizes will be limited to twelve. students.

Bellyup runs 10 week terms parallel to school terms. We run on a rolling syllabus basis, that is, we start each new term intake as one group which we then roll though the syllabus:

Level 1 - Basic Moves

  • Smooth
  • Sharp
  • Introduction to Veil
  • Revision

Level 2 - Developing Moves

  • Folkloric
  • Drum Dance
  • Veil
  • Introduction to Cane

Level 3 - Continuing the Dance

 

Level 4 - Mastering the Dance

Those student who join the current term will progress into Basic Moves – Sharp next term and so on. By the end of Level 2 most students are competent enough to dance publicly if they so choose. But we prefer that students focus on body awareness and enjoyment rather than performing.

 

 
Please pass on this information to your friends and family who may be interested it is always great when you have someone you know with you to share in the fun, more the merrier. Our students range in age from 8 to 70 something so age is not an issue for us. We have a class with a mum with 3 daughters, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and in another we have 3 sisters, they are all having loads of fun. We also have a number of workmates who attend class together as well. So by all means bring a friend or two, more the merrier.

 

What to Wear?

Wear something comfortable such as a T-shirt and track pants try to keep it close fitting (no you don't need to bare your stomach) and bring a water bottle. In the winter months the floor can get quite cold so bring non-slip yoga socks or dance shoes.

Class Descriptions

Basic Moves – Smooth

This class will introduce the basic slow or smooth moves, posture and techniques of Belly Dance and combine them in simple drills and choreography which will also incorporate some smooth moves.

Basic Moves – Sharp

This class will introduce the use of basic sharp moves and rhythms introducing and expanding on concepts of dance move combinations and overlays. This term the students will build on previous smooth and direction changes to faster tempos and transitions through a fun choreography.

Develop Moves – Drum

This class will be undertaking a short drum piece that incorporates staging dynamics.  This term the students will build on previous skills developed in the Basic Moves syllabus with increasing tempo and transitions through a short choreography.

Develop Moves – Fast Drum

This class will be undertaking a fast “group” drum choreography that incorporates group dynamics and dependencies and interaction with others in the dance space.

Develop Moves – Review

This is a consolidation term for students that have completed both the Basic Moves and Developing Moves syllabus.  This term focuses on technique, execution, timing and expression.

Continuing the Dance

This class is for continuing students who will be focusing on the aesthetics and forms of the dance including:
• Hand and Arm gestures • Polishing technique • Dancing with Props • Developing improvisation skills • Developing simple choreography • Polishing performances

Mastering the Dance

This class is for advanced continuing students who will be building on the aesthetics and dynamics of the dance including and preparing for solo and troupe performances.
